how to succeed as an indie band (well, sort of)

Did anyone listen to NPR yesterday and hear their intriguing story about The Dresden Dolls?

The Dresden Dolls, an indie band comprised of a pianist and drummer, has opened for Nine Inch Nails, toured extensively, signed with a decent record label and yet continues to pay themselves only $1,500 each month because that's all they can afford.
